Saturday. September 17, 2011. A year ago. I flew my butt (and the majority of my belongings) to Hawaii. And in hangar 105, I watched my long distance, flower-sending, joke-making, goofball of a boyfriend walk off a plane. After spending seven, excruciating months communicating through emails, text messages, and sparse phone calls, I was standing in front of a man who had spent the majority of his 2011 in Afghanistan (aka “the ‘Ghan”). Three hundred and sixty five days later and we’ve accumulated roughly 18,000 photos worth of memories.
We found a place to live right behind one of the top 10 beaches in the world. We got PADI certified. We made big purchases; Trevor’s ’12 Tacoma and my vintage-esque scooter. We island hopped to (1) Kauai, (2) Big Island, and (3) Maui. We met local celebrities: Jack Johnson (!!!), Heather Brown, Paula Fuga, Mark Cunningham, Colleen Wilcox, and Taylor Wily. We surfed Castles, Tonggs, Queen’s Beach, Hickam Harbor, Haleiwa, and Puena Point. We witnessed fires, floods, and power shortages. We ate some ONO grinds. We swam with multicolor fish, eels, turtles, dolphins, and sharks. We were able to show both sides of our family around Oahu as well as spent time back in California. We hiked to countless waterfalls. We have been to numerous concerts, local theater shows, and movies. We spent hours and hours and hours of our 52 weeks taking in this beautiful island. And although we have had our worst moments here as a couple, we pulled through – bigger and better than ever.
I am thankful my corpsman is home. Safe. Love you, Mahpunk. Buddy. Trev. Trevor. Words cannot express how awesome our ‘year of adventure’ has been. Bring it on, 2013. And Hawaii, you have been everything I have ever dreamed. You’ve made me a wide-eyed wander. I am stoked to see what the future has in store for us.
So, out of 18,000 photos, these are my most memorable moments…
